I was always fascinated by Steve Jobs’ story, vision, and the company he co-founded, Apple. He influenced business, technology, and had a tremendous impact on the world. In his short life he has changed the way people live with useful tools starting with the creation of the personal computer, and created products we thought we never thought we wanted or needed like the iPad.

My first Apple computer was this 2008 17" MacBook Pro. I keep seeing these pop up in videos, television and film. Not to mention my friends who ride bikes, race cars, and rappel off tall buildings and cliffs are capturing some awesome footage and sharing on YouTube and Facebook. I have some crazy friends. Nonetheless, I don’t have a particular need for this awesome GoPro HD Hero waterproof camera, but it’s definitely on my “want” list! We visit my parents in central Florida almost every year and would love to have this on the roller coasters and maybe a water ride with the kids (the camera comes with a waterproof housing). My son and I sometimes drive his 20mph E-Maxx RC truck around the house and neighborhood and I bet we could have fun with a GoPro attached. Not to mention I love to drive so getting some nice footage with a dash cam would be way cool. Yeah, I’m such a camera dad.

Years ago I entered the wedding industry shooting wedding videos. The NLE (non-linear editing) software I used in the past was Adobe Elements, Pinnacle Express, and Adobe Premiere. My favorite one though was Avid Xpress Pro. Then I switched to the digital SLR and pretty much left my video days behind. I am now a professional photographer, NOT a video editor in any way shape or form… but then I switched to Mac.

On the Mac there is this thing called iMovie and it got me back into video editing, but only on the basic level for personal use. I am in no way writing this blog post as a video editing expert. iMovie is not a professional editing app, but great for short projects or home videos. I like iMovie a lot and have used it for Shutter Wars and personal home videos. But I have always wanted a little more, but without too much complexity. Enter Apple’s newest and notorious video editing app, Final Cut Pro X!

Here’s a quick sample cut I recently did from a lighting demo and editorial shoot in McKee-Beshers sunflower field. Nothing too fancy, just demonstrating some of the new transitions, generators and titles:

Final Cut Pro X has been receiving a lot of criticism lately, particularly from professional video editors. I have read in countless blogs, tweets, and Facebook statuses that many are not happy with the missing components they loved about past versions of Final Cut Pro. I don’t know every detail about this video editing app yet, but after working on two short reels I must say that I really do like what I see so far.

THE PROS AND CONS

Here are just a few things I really like about FCPX:

Cool new themes, animations, text and transitions

Magnetic timeline where clips snap into place so no more unwanted gaps

The new timeline lets you “stack” multiple tracks of videos and audio for easier editing, similar to pro apps

Automatic audio sync… YES that’s right! Very helpful when filming in dual system mode, or audio recorded on a separate device. I haven’t tested this out yet but if it works, no need for third party sync plugins!

1300 royalty free sound effects – nice!

Clip Connections – this was quite helpful to me keeping my clips and audio together when I move things around

Inline Precision Editor – love this one as it helps me cut clips and audio more accurately at exact points all in one timeline

Auditions – this is VERY cool, letting me easily skim over a group of selected clips or effects within a point in the timeline to decide which clips I like better

And that’s just scratching the surface. There really is a lot more to take a look at and try. It’s basically iMovie on steroids. AWESOME.

What do I NOT like? Well, I can’t really say at this point to be fair. I’ve only had this less than a week, and to be honest, I am just expecting something that has a little more to offer than iMovie. And so far FCPX really delivers. I am still grinning knowing that I can sync audio to video in post without the use of third party syncing apps! The only thing I am having an issue with is the new 64-bit architecture lets your computer use all the RAM you have so that it can handle larger frame sizes and keep more frames in memory. The benefit is that you can work with multilayered effects and create bigger projects. The downside is that it sucks up a lot of your CPU and memory, at least on my machine.

WHAT’S DIFFERENT ABOUT FCPX COMPARED TO iMOVIE?

Right off the bat, FCPX has more horsepower and a richer feature set. Visit the Apple site or the Mac app store to learn more. But take a look at the following screenshots. If that doesn’t make you scratch your head a bit, I don’t know what will. They look awfully similar…but trust me, they are different.

A screenshot of the latest version of iMovie.

A screenshot of Final Cut Pro X. Looks quite similar to iMovie. Why didn't Apple just call it "iMovie 19 or something"?

If you look at the screenshots above, you’ll notice how similar the user interface is between iMovie and FCPX. The layout and flow is virtually similar to one another. You gotta wonder why Apple didn’t just call it iMovie version 18.9 or something. If you’re comfortable with iMovie you’ll find your way around FCPX. Upon editing a couple of sizzle reels over the last few days on my MacBook Pro 17, I noticed FCPX had a few moments of the dreaded spinning color wheel (e.g., computer hang up). My system does meet or exceed minimum system requirements, so other than the occasional color wheel, this thing runs smooth.

FCPX is definitely differentiates itself from iMovie delivering features that you’d find in some professional video editing apps.

WHO IS FINAL CUT PRO X FOR?

In my opinion, FCPX is a much better video editing app than iMovie for the camera dad like me who happens to be a professional photographer. Not to mention the huge market of photographers incorporating HD video services into their business model. Now there’s the kicker. Apple’s timing could not have been better. The rising popularity of DSLRs with HD video was screaming for more horsepower than iMovie, minus the advanced editing capabilities of some of the past Final Cut Pro apps. I can’t help but think that Apple was responding to that market, which happens to be much larger than the niche market of professional editors. Is this indicative of a potential business plan that Apple will no longer be supporting professional video editors and turning their attention more to the masses? Time will tell.

That said, I am sorry to hear that Final Cut Pro X disappointed many professional video editors, and I can see why. There are a lot of things you cannot control or manipulate that professional editors want. However, I beg to differ with those who do not believe this can be suited for professional projects. If you’re a good editor, you can make the most of FCPX and produce some amazing results. Not to mention you can add on Motion 5 to enhance your production value in post. And as for the millions of consumers and professional photographers with HD video cameras who want to dive into more video editing with a fluid app, you might be in for a treat. I believe this app was made for you too.

Final Cut Pro X is available in the Mac app store for $299.99.

I am not a fan of camera backpacks because it can be downright uncomfortable for me to lug around up to 60 pounds of gear on my back. Ouch! But when the time came that I needed a quick low profile bag solution to transport my main essentials through airport security and board international flights, I looked to Think Tank Photo. I shoot not only in the DC area but around the country and overseas as well. International flights are typically more strict when it comes to the size of your carry-on bags, and I hate being delayed. Sure, I could’ve gone for their amazing international flight approved Airport International V2 roller bag, but I already own the slightly larger domestic flight approved Airport Security V2 roller bag. Redundancy kept racking my brain at this point. The thought of pulling two roller bags onto an airline just didn’t fit my needs. I like to have at least one hand free so the solution would be a backpack of some kind. And lets be honest though, a bag called the Shape Shifter sounded too cool NOT to have in your arsenal of gear bags! Think Tank Photo has several camera backpack solutions, but the one that intrigued me was the Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter backpack – the name alone sounded like something out of a SciFi movie.

As a destination wedding photographer it’s important that I keep my main gear with me at all times. When there’s the risk of lost luggage, at least you’ll have your gear with you to do the job you’ve been paid to do when you arrive at your destination! Finding the right carry-on solution is not always easy. There are many choices out there and sometimes it must takes some trial and error and recommendations from your friends. Think Tank Photo has many backpack solutions that are well designed, well-made, built by photographers for photographers. Lets take a look at my backpack of choice, the Shape Shifter.

That's yours truly with the Think Tank Photo Shape Shifter backpack covering a destination wedding in Costa Rica.

Let’s get right to it shall we?

PROS:

Low profile compared to other backpacks I’ve used

Designed to expand and contract it shapes around your gear so there’s no wasted space

Lots of storage capability for a low profile bag

Surprisingly comfortable thanks to the padded backside and waist strap

Holds a 17 inch laptop

A great solution as an airline travel carry-on for your main gear, unless you prefer a roller bag like Think Tank Photo’s Airport International V2

CONS:

Not easy to work out of on location as the bag is designed to collapse when taking gear in and out

While it’s not easy to work out of for me on location, I usually have a shoulder bag or my Boda lens bag anyway for wedding work. I carry my cameras on my shoulders and store secondary items in the Shape Shifter.

I have some iPhone 4 photos and video to give you a closer look as to what I think about the bag and how it applies to my travel photography work.

I’ve owned this Retrospective 10 shoulder camera bag from Think Tank Photo for almost a year now and I have to say that it has not let me down once! This is truly one of the best shoulder camera bags I’ve ever used.

PROS:

Still holding strong after a year of use.

Well thought out design, configurable, and plenty of storage for a bag this size.

Still the most comfortable shoulder strap I’ve ever tested!

CONS:

Just one – my only minor gripe is that I’d like to see more rigid dividers. They seem a little flimsy for me, but they do the job and still hold up well inside. If they were too rigid it would probably defeat the purpose of having a casual soft-sided messenger-style camera shoulder bag.

While I would’ve liked to see more rigid inserts, the bag has maintained its durability and functionality after hard use. I still love its discreet look so that it doesn’t scream “camera bag”. My most favorite part of this bag though has to be the shoulder strap. I’ve owned and tried many straps and this is by far the most comfortable I’ve used so far. The bag is available in two colors, BLACK and PINESTONE. I think the Pinestone Retrospective 10 shoulder bag looks really nice, and perhaps even more discreet than the tactical look of a black bag. To each their own!

I decided after owning it for over a year that an updated review was needed. I shot and edited this on my iPhone 4, I hope you find this helpful!

Thanks for watching! And keep up with my blog and TWITTER as I’ll be reviewing the Shape Shifter backpack camera bag from Think Tank Photo soon.

The MiniPlus LED video lights from Litepanels

I met up with Nils Granholm of Cavus Media to test out the amazing LED Litepanel MiniPlus lights from the award winning company Litepanels. The company has seen success in both television and film bringing a new solution to almost any lighting challenge. Litepanels LED lights are ultra-efficient with soft, directional output praised by lighting directors, photographers, and cinematographers alike. The lights are cool to the touch, portable, self-contained with no cables to tie you down, and offer infinitely dimmable 5600ºK or 3200ºK output (with virtually no color shift) by simply turning a knob. Choose from snap-on batteries, AC adapters, cigarette lighter adapters, or run them off your camera battery. There’s even one that runs on AA batteries.

As a still photographer myself, I am always on the lookout for lighting solutions. I’ve heard of Litepanels before so I was very excited to get my hands on the product. Nils and I tested and reviewed the Litepanels MiniPlus 2-Light Kit from B&H Photo then cut a video that we hope will help demonstrate the effectiveness of the lights. Although this was a 2-Light kit, we had an extra Litepanel Miniplus on hand to use when we needed a third light. Here’s what we thought:

PROS

Small form factor, lightweight, portable, dimmable and daylight balanced.

Virtually no heat generated, the energy efficient LED lights are cool to touch.

A three-light system sets up in less than 2 minutes, watch the video to see!

No wires or cables, the batteries last up to 2 hours.

Produces a great quality of light.

CONS

Would love to see position markings on the dimmer in the event we need to maintain consistent dim levels.

Expensive for some, the 2-light kit is around $2400. One light alone starts at around $800, and when you add the battery, gels and other accessories it can add up fast.

Not ideal for bright sunny conditions, but good for fill, especially under open shade.

Who is this light for? Pretty much any lighting director, photographer and cinematographer could use these Litepanel lights. They fill the gap in scenarios in which energy efficient lighting is important. And because many of their products are cordless and have a small form factor, it can be used to add that extra light needed for fill, yet hidden from plain view of the camera lens. Sure, for a still photographer it’s expensive when your Speedlite or reflectors can already produce great light, especially with a softbox or other light modifier attached. But with a video light of this quality that is soft and dimmable, what you see is what you get. No softbox needed. It may not replace the Speedlite or strobe, but it can easily find its place in your lighting bag. I can already envision ways to use these light in my photo shoots and I hope to share some examples this summer.

There are many Litepanel products and accessories available, but a kit is a great place to start. So be sure to visit B&H Photo online to find the right Litepanel solution for you.

Note: In the video at one point I mistakenly referred to the light as “Micro”, confusing it with the MicroPro LED lights Litepanels make. That said, I hope the video is helpful!

I recently had the chance to try out a 15″ x 15″ Lastolite Ezybox Softbox for hotshoe flash. They’re available in larger sizes as well, such as 24 x 24 or 30 x30. Be sure you get the one with the newer Mark II Bracket. More on that in a minute. You can pick up a 24 x 24 Lastolite Ezybox Softbox at B&H Photo online, or the 30 x 30 Lastlite Ezybox at B&H Photo. If this will be your first softbox for a flash, I recommend the 24″ or the 21 x21 Lastolite Ezybox from B&H Photo, it’s small enough for portability, yet big enough for coverage. If you have more cash to spend, get the 15 x 15 as well to add for your second flash such as an edge light or rim light. But I really love it for portraits to if I want a narrower beam to add some drama to the lighting.

After a few days with it I am impressed with this product. But there are a few pros and cons to everything.

PROS:

Very lightweight and compact that tears down into a slim carry bag

Fairly easy to set up and go

Really nice quality of light, similar to my Westcott Apollo 28 softbox

CONS:

Build quality issue with the 1st generation flash bracket – one of the mount pieces broke too easily

Takes a little longer to set up compared to my Westcott Apollo 28 softbox

Can only be used with one flash – might not be an issue though for most photographers

Overall I really like this softbox and would recommend it to anyone looking for a simple easy to use softbox for their flash. The quality of light looks great, very lightweight for an assistant to hold using a light stand or monopod. One of the smaller Ezyboxes I was using, the 15 x 15, is good for head shots and medium portraits with good lighting. I can also be used as an edge light (e.g., placed off to the side or behind the subject). With a narrower light spread you might find some fall off if you compose your head shot wide, although it can make for a nice dramatic effect as well.

Thanks to photographer Kristie Blake for loaning me her Ezybox to review. Enjoy a few photos and a behind-the-scenes video of my son taking MY photo lol! First here’s a quick look at the product, pretty simple really, and simple is good!

But be aware of how the light falls off below his hands. To give you some subject perspective, my son here is 8 years old, about 45 inches tall. LENS: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L. ISO 100, f/18, f/160th. Outside at 6:30pm. Flash was set to manual 1/2 power triggered with a Pocket Wizard. This is a good time of day, or later, if you want to drop the background enough when using a small light source like a flash. That said, the flash at 1/2 power isn't powerful in sunny conditions, we had to keep the softbox between 4-6 feet away from the subject in all the shots.

Close up under some shade from the harsh high midday sun provided by the building. The light quality from the flash-in-Ezybox is nice and soft. Beats the harder light from a bare flash any day. Flash was set to manual 1/2 power triggered with a Pocket Wizard. Exposure: ISO 200, f/4, 1/200th. LENS: Canon 100mm Macro. I prefer longer focal length lenses for portraits in general, 85mm or longer. I like the low distortion (if any) and the way it compresses everything nicely in the image, including any foreground elements, subject, and background.

IMAGE LEFT – NO flash through Ezybox. IMAGE RIGHT – with flash-through-Ezybox. Ezybox was camera left raised up to about 7 feet high and tilted down – Alex is 5'9" tall. The light was about 7 feet away from her. Notice again the light fall off below her dress line. I also have a bare speedlite (flash) camera right and behind Alex. ISO 160, f/3.2, 1/160th. Flash was set to manual 1/2 power triggered with a Pocket Wizard. LENS: Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L at 175mm.

A wider shot with the Canon 100mm lens. ISO 250, f/3.2, 1/250th. Same light setup – IMAGE LEFT, no Ezybox light. IMAGE RIGHT, with Ezybox light. Flash was set to manual 1/2 power triggered with a Pocket Wizard. The Ezybox was still on the light stand about 7 feet extended, camera right, and about 10 feet away from her. Notice the farther you pull away the light the wider the light falls on the subject. But it sometimes may result in slightly harsher light. This time the bare flash (speedlite) is almost directly to the right of Alex, or my camera left, with the flash zoom set to 70mm.

Also check out the brand new RETROSPECTIVE 5 BAG, perfect old school camera bag solution for the new school photographer.

Here is the conclusion of my pilot web series SHUTTER WARS Photography Reality Show, broken up into 3 parts. I also included a separate video of some funny moments and outtakes.

MY THOUGHTS AFTER PRODUCING THE FIRST “SHUTTER WARS | PHOTOGRAPHY REALITY SHOW”

I believe what sets this photography reality show apart is everyday people – the contestants consist of everyday people like you and me, not the brooding eccentric artists that some my associate the word “photographer” with. Most of the contestants chosen have been shooting for 5 years or less, some even less than a year. The appeal of the contestants as everyday people can attract more of my target audience – entry level digital SLR consumers, many of who are parents. Shutter Wars can inspire, educate and empower the viewer by giving insight into what it takes to be a photographer. As this show will demonstrate, it’s not as easy as point-and-shoot. In a crowded and exploding marketplace of new photographers entering the industry every year, it’s anyone’s game. Moving forward, I hope to attract distributors and financial backing to produce a complete 12 challenge series. I am in the beginning stages of some dialog with a few contacts in the industry as we speak.

THE PRODUCTION OF “SHUTTER WARS | PHOTOGRAPHY REALITY SHOW“

The photographer contestants face the judges as their photo challenge results are critiqued. The contestants were challenged to photograph a child model in 30 minutes time and to produce an “innocence” themed photo and a “disturbed” theme photo. The feedback they received could prove valuable to new photographers and photo hobbyists.

Shutter Wars was shot in 24p using Canon’s popular digital SLR cameras that have full 1080p HD video. Here’s a list of some of main equipment used to shoot the webisodes:

Principle filming of Shutter Wars took place over four days in Alexandria, VA. The next step is to seek financial backing and distribution so I can produce the next Shutter Wars. Although this PILOT webisode series only had two photo challenges, we wrote twelve(12) photo challenges to show proof of life for a typical single season run for broadcast.

SYNOPSIS:

Three judges, six (or more) photographers, one chance to create a photograph that will win them a sponsored prize in each webisode . Watch the challenge unfold as photographers of all levels and disciplines compete alongside in an exploding market of photographers proving once and for all that it takes more than “auto” mode to understand the art of photography.

“Shutter Wars” is an American challenge-based reality TV and/or webisode concept created by DC photographer and producer Armin DeFiesta. The concept focuses on professional photography and its target market – entry-level DSLR consumers. Retailers have indicated that suppliers such as Canon, Sony and Nikon report that the entry-level photography market are some of their most profitable segments in the DSLR market space. “Shutter Wars” could attract viewership from photographers and non-photographers alike, inspiring DSLR owners to gain more technical knowledge and take their personal creativity to the next level. The series would be about more than just photographers participating in photo challenges, it could about discovering that the real competition is themselves. Because of the educational value and the contestants’ drive to be a better photographer, “Shutter Wars” would be a good match for product manufacturer sponsorship. The concept can be developed as standalone webisodes or a series of elimination-based photo challenges.

The concept can be developed as standalone webisodes or a series of elimination-based photo challenges. The show will definitely challenge photographers of all levels and styles. The cast will be a mix of experience, mid level and aspiring shooters. I want Shutter Wars to emphasize what it really takes to create a photo – the art and the personal and technical challenges many experience today. And putting them in a competitive environment will help push the artists out of their comfort zone and learn something new about themselves and the craft.

Visit http://www.shutterwars.com to learn more about the concept of this reality show about photography. It’s a pilot right now and I’m in the process of getting connected to pitch it to the right people for distribution and/or funding. I hope one day I can produce a full 10-12 episode season, maybe more! And while this pilot webisode series only has two photo challenges, we actually wrote 12 photo challenges to fill a typical season run.

WHO IS THIS SHOW FOR?

I’m targeting this show at the huge and growing market of entry-level DSLR photographers and consumers. Photography is big business right now and the niche market of viewers and consumers are interested in the subject, learning more about photography, and getting the most out of their DSLR. While this show concept isn’t necessarily aimed at professional or seasoned photographers, I intend to cast veteran shooters to balance the competition.

UPDATE! Here is the entire 8-part webisode playlist:

New or seasoned… it’s anyone’s game!

Tomorrow comes the first webisode of SHUTTER WARS, a photography reality show… visit http://shutterwars.com at 7pm EST to watch the first 9 minute webisode!

There’ll be a total of 4 weekly webisodes, about 10 minutes each. You will see six photographers from around the country competing outside their comfort zones. Their photos will be critiqued and evaluated resulting in ONE WINNER of a camera bag from Think Tank Photo. This show will be great for those getting into photography or just want to learn more about the digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera they just got and want to take better photos!

In the meantime, check out the latest trailer if you haven’t already.
