In light of my photography reality show SHUTTER WARS that’s targeted at new photographers I thought it’d be fun to do a little “blind-eye-test” by shooting some comparison photos with a Canon EOS 60D entry-level SLR

and some with my Canon EOS 5D Mark II

(pro level). Now this is not the most scientific approach, but our kids’ patience wore thin. But this should still give you an idea of the image quality from both SLRs. Lighting used was available light, a Photoflex diffuser and a small Photoflex Litedisc reflector. Plus some off camera flash in some shots for just a touch more fill light.

My daughter was not in the mood for photos today lol (iPhone photo)

Of course when mom showed up she was all smiles (iPhone photo)

I think the 60D is an excellent SLR, especially under $1K. I would choose it over the Rebel T2i/T3i because of the built-in wireless off-camera flash capabilities. But if you’re not interested in wireless control of your flash, the Canon EOS Rebel T2i

or the newer Canon EOS Rebel T3i

should suffice. I also like the 60D’s swivel LCD screen because it helps me for video captures when shooting from awkward angles – it can also be useful for still photos. This SLR also shoots 8 frames per second, plenty of speed for action shots… or your kids who just won’t sit still like mine lol.

Left Image: Canon EOS 60D | Right Image: Canon 5D Mark II. Both photos taken using a Canon 85mm f/1.8. Both cameras set to 1/1000th, f/2.2 and ISO 100.

In the photos above it’s hard to tell the difference between the 60D (LEFT) and the 5D Mark II (RIGHT) as far as image quality is concerned. My reflecting light was a little off in the 5D image but that’s my fault lol. The image quality from the 60D straight out of the camera is excellent in my opinion. The only drawback for me is that the 60D is still a crop sensor. I am spoiled by the full frame sensor of my 5D where the viewfinders is “WYSIWYG”. Let’s take a look at the next set of photos….

Take with the Canon EOS 60D. Lens used for this little experiment was a Canon 24-105mm f/4. Exposure: 1/125, f/4, ISO 400. Lighting, ambient and off camera flash fired manually w/Pocket Wizards at 1/8th power bounced off 15 foot ceiling. Focal length was 105mm.

This image was taken with the 5D Mark II and the same exposure and lighting as the 60D photo. Notice how the 5D Mark II captures more of the scene, it's the same "scene" you'd see in your viewfinder.

There’s really not much more than I can say about the 60D. It’s a very capable and affordable SLR. The fruit bowl test shots show the differences in framing due to the different image sensors, but the image quality looks great in both. However, I find it odd how similar the 60D is to the Canon Rebel T2i or T3i, and even the 7D. While they all use the same image sensors resulting in great image quality, other differences are minor to some, but major to others. The Rebels are more “plasticky” feeling, the 60D more solid, and the 7D even more hefty and larger with some weather sealing to protect it from the elements. If I were to choose a still photo SLR, I’d go for the Canon EOS 7D

in a heartbeat because I like the customizable Auto-Focus selection system better. But if I wanted something that gave me some video usability I’d go for the 60D over the others because of the handy swivel LCD.

I found the swivel LCD to be quite useful when shooting video from angles that would otherwise not be easy to do from certain angles, especially low to the ground (iPhone photo)

Here’s a short video sample taken with the 60D:

If you’re looking for an affordable “entry-level” SLR that produces high quality images, shoots fast, & has full HD 1080p video, the 60D is well worth the investment. But so are the others close to it – the T2i/T3i and the 7D. It will all come down to what features are important to you as a consumer. Not everyone will care for the swivel LCD or the extra heft of the 7D. In the end, the SLR is just a tool, something for anyone to enjoy and learn about photography. But that’s what you have to do to get the most out of any digital SLR – learn and understand exposure (e.g., aperture, shutter speed, ISO), learn how to maximize your camera’s features, and get the most out of your investment. After all, the SLR is a tool for your mind’s eye, your imagination. Run with it! I hope this mini-review was helpful. Enjoy a few more photos straight out of the Canon EOS 60D!

I recently did a photo shoot in Loudoun County, VA, a beautiful area where I must’ve passed by 20 wineries. What was originally scheduled to be an afternoon shoot had turned into an evening one, 30 minutes after sunset. Situations like these test a photographer’s ability to adapt. While my original vision for the shoot was under daylight conditions, the time came to apply my lighting skills in the pitch dark.

I planned on traveling light for this shoot so I used the following light sources & equipment–

Canon 5D Mark II and 1D Mark IV

Canon 85mm f/1.8 and Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L lenses

Two Impact air-cushioned light stands

Three Pocket Wizards (for remote triggering of speedlites)

Two Canon 580EXII speedlites inside a Westcott 28 softbox as main light source

One Canon 580EXII speedlite with a 1/2 CTO gel for backlight and edge lighting

Two Sylvania Silverstar Ultra High Performance halogen headlights, courtesy of my Chevy

We chose the location of a broken down truck next to a red barn where there was minimal tree cover so that some of the stars in the night sky could be seen. My model Alex did an amazing job leveraging her unique style to contrast the country-like setting on a hot and muggy night – I think keeping her comfortable and cool inside my air-conditioned truck between setups also helped! We plan on continuing this photo shoot at a later date to capture different sides of Alex’s personality so stay tuned!

With several engagement sessions ahead starting next weekend I am totally stoked about this year’s wedding season. I have some of the best couples and amazing weddings to share with you this year! In the meantime, I’m going to try & enjoy myself with friends & family over the next couple of weeks. After that, I’ll be slamming with weddings in DC, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and the Atlantis in the Bahamas. Gotta love destination weddings! My intern will be joining us this Spring as well – Becky Hayhurst from Minneapolis, really excited to have her on board, you’ll be seeing more of her as the season progresses! I’m really looking forward to Reanna & Jeremy’s wedding in the Bahamas where I’ll be shooting some footage for my next behind-the-scenes video. My former associate Noah Hayes & I will have our Flip Mino HD’s and my new Canon 5D Mark II w/HD video mode. awesome! Denise will be with us to keep us out of trouble and do her logistical magic as always. 2009 is looking really good =)

On Saturday I got some fun moments of the lovely Racheal Baxter Cook in her gorgeous wedding gown. Racheal is a manager at Grace Yoga in Richmond, VA where I spent time with over 40 other photographers showing video light methods, networking, socializing, and just having a plain good old time! My friend & photographer Tisha McCuiston & wedding planner Pauline of Elations Designs organized this big event. I had a total blast with everyone & helping photographers experiment with video light. Thanks Racheal for letting us use your incredible Yoga studio and for being our bridal model!

Despite the rain, Racheal was simply wonderful in front of the camera!

While I was there, my friend Ingrid Kaslik got this cool shot of me… I was holding my Lowel ID video light off to my left. Thanks Ingrid!

(background painting by Dennis Wymer)

And a fun little video I captured with my Flip Mino HD cam!

I had an amazing week at WPPI in Las Vegas, the biggest Wedding & Portrait Photographers International convention! Huge trade show, dozens of workshops, and lots of parties! It was so great to catch up and hang out with old friends and make new ones in the industry. What made this trip even more worthwhile is that my personal album designer Grace Chou of Grace Chou Designs attended the convention too! We spent time reviewing so many album companies, critiquing the quality of craftsmanship, and discussing action plans and our future plans for this year’s brides. In short, we got work done! But we definitely made some time for play and fun memories! Here are some photos courtesy of me from my iPhone and my good friends Kenny Kim, Tisha McCuiston, and David Escalante…

Here’s one of the big DC/Baltimore dinner…plus two friends from Tampa, FL =)
Moshe Zusman, Hadar Goren, Laura Kay, Kimberly Brooke, Shelby Leigh, Kristen Leigh, Noah Hayes, Erin & Chris Harvey, (not pictured) Kristie Blake, Megan Beth, and Christine Bentley (our Orange County friend!).

Somehow I found myself at Studio Cafe 3 times while at MGM Grand, lol.
Once with the DC/Baltimore folks, once with my friends Laura Kay and Brooke Schwab. And here I am with Kristie, Bob, & Ray.

… the lovely Dawn Davis!

I had the pleasure of assisting my friends at the booth for A PORTRAIT PROJECT, Christine’s vision. Here I am with Kristie & Christine. The non-profit organization effort is to provide photography for family victims of domestic violence.

A little gambling! Here’s Noah, Shelby & Tiffani deep into the games… and Tisha deep into shooting as usual! Total violation of casino rules – NO PHOTOGRAPHY ALLOWED! Ha!

My good friend Erin Harvey of http://www.erinchris.com, Tampa, FL

No trip out west is complete without a stop at In-N-Out Burger!
Funny story… Asim, Tiffani, Noah, Tisha, Grace & I took two cabs to the burger joint. Only to realize we’ll need cab rides back. No such luck, no cabs were around the parking lot. Asim had the bright idea of asking a random stranger for a ride back to MGM Grand. Surprisingly enough, one of the In-N-Out Burger employees was on break and his girlfriend was visiting. They were kind enough to offer us a ride back, LOL! We had a good feeling about them so none of my spidey senses were going off =) Good times!

Of course, the lovely Kristie & Christine, haha!

I was saddened I didn’t get a photo with Laura Kay, not sure why we didn’t think about it(?!). But I did manage to snap a pic of her dinner with my iPhone.

Grace & I working the trade show floor

Here’s Grace & I chatting with Kevin Swan of http://www.kissweddingbooks.com

Haha, not sure why I was the only guy standing with the girls in this pic!

Here’s one of the group & our friendly server… not really, hehe!

I seemed to be caught twittering on my iPhone 3G constantly!

Here we are losing our wages, haha!

At the big GO|BEE & PhotographyMentor party, Tiffani, Erin, Chris & I made fools of ourselves in the fun photo booth!

My friends & I got to spend some time with a group of about 100 shooters from all over the country (and world probably) having a fun night shoot with celebrity wedding photographer Bob Davis (Eva Longoria, Eddie Murphy, etc.). Here are just a few shots I got from the fun event.

We had maybe 4 models with us so we could break into groups. As you can imagine, shooting with large groups is challenging, most shots are random. Here’s just one side shot I was able to get of one of the models.

We had fun shooting a couple, Roberto & Kim Valenzuela. Roberto happens to be a well-known wedding photographer based in Beverly Hills, CA.

I loved using video light to bring some depth to these shots…
