PHOTOS OF THE WOODROW WILSON MEMORIAL BRIDGE PEDESTRIAN AND BIKE PATH

I’m working on catching up on album designs and editing, lots of work ahead of me already! In the meantime, I like to share some personal photos. Now some of you know I cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge several times a week crossing the Potomac River between Virginia & Maryland. The bridge has a history of being a bottleneck traffic nightmare. But the bridge expansion project has proved to be an improvement, thanks to the divided local & thru lanes! I know, real exciting right? Well to me it is exciting since it impacts my stress levels every time I’m on that bridge. But wow, major delays are a thing of the past …. unless there’s continued road work or a fender bender. In that case, you can’t avoid delays no matter what road you’re on. The end goal for the bridge is to make it 12 lanes wide, 6 on each side, to manage the flow of I-95 and I-495 (Beltway) traffic and minimize bottlenecking. YES! =)  I’ve known this bridge for a long time and it’s nice to see the improvements already. Better yet, they’re still on schedule… last I heard at least =)

Not only has the bridge project improved traffic conditions, but they also built a new pedestrian & bike path. Now that’s something I didn’t really know about until studying the plans a few months ago (yeah, I can geek out with the best of them). Anyway, back on the 4th of July weekend I took the family out to walk this bridge… of course I took a few photos!

A view of the path from the top of the foot bridge... yep that's a Park Police cruiser you see patroling the area.

A view of the ramp up to the pedestrian bridge. Park Police patrols it heavily on the weekends, there were a handful of them on the 4th of July weekend, plus several police cruisers at the base of the paths. You can see two of them patroling on those 3-wheel segway-like scooters.

I actually am thankful for Park Police's presence. It's not easy to get to the bridge should there be an emergency. Seeing that they were detailed to the bridge that weekend should bring peace of mind to many visitors.
